Bringing Drones + STEAM to Phipps Neighborhoods

Bringing Drones + STEAM to Phipps Neighborhoods

Phipps Neighborhoods is one of our closest partners. They asked us to bring STEM programming to over 1,000 students across the Bronx and Manhattan in New York City. The staff at Phipps has been making incredible education and workforce opportunities available to their families, especially those in high-need neighborhoods. We are honored to lead their summer STEAM education efforts as one part of those crucial services.

Scope

  • K-8 students at community centers and summer school programs throughout the Bronx and Manhattan
  • 16 instructors at 9 sites, leading STEM classes 2-5 days a week through the summer

Coursework

  • Debuted new drone curriculum, oversaw TRUST certification
  • Hands-on Automobile, Roller Coaster Engineering, and Mad Science courses

Outcomes

  • 700 hours and 1,000 students served throughout the summer session
  • Coding experience and vocabulary for drones through CodeBlocks

The Challenge

Phipps Neighborhoods wanted to bring new ideas and technology to their students get them excited about exploring STEAM during the hot NYC summer session. Ready, Set, Drone was selected as a great way to introduce important tech to students that is being used worldwide. Other project topics included structural engineering concepts through building roller coasters and automobiles and performing real-world science experiments to learn about the scientific method

The Plan

We are committed to bringing not only engaging and inspiring STEM content to our students and communities, but also new and upcoming concepts and technologies. All participating students passed the online TRUST certification to become licensed recreational drone flyers, giving them real documentation of their learning in progress. Bringing projects like drones into our programs fosters excitement about how our world is changing, and how our students can be a part of the future!

Excellent engagement between instructors and students. Such a lively class. Kudos to ScholarStem!

Highlights

Ready, Set, Drone!

Students took turns flying drones using tablets and smartphones. In addition, obstacle courses were created and time trials were recorded.

Roller Coaster Engineers

Using kits and classroom supplies, students wireframed and designed by hand different forms of roller coasters, observing speed and safety.

Jr. Auto Engineers

Our young automobile engineers learned about the many different types of vehicles, what they are used for, and the parts that make them up! Here is a group with their race car.

Conclusion

We are committed to bringing not only engaging and inspiring STEM content to our students and communities, but also new and upcoming concepts and technologies. All participating students passed the online TRUST certification to become licensed recreational drone flyers, giving them real documentation of their learning in progress. Bringing projects like drones into our programs fosters excitement about how our world is changing, and how our students can be a part of the future!
